Two recent announcements from The Pensions Regulator (“TPR”) make it even more important for employers to meet their Auto Enrolment obligations.
Firstly TPR will be carrying out spot checks on businesses it has reason to believe are not complying with their AE obligations. The checks will be carried out with only a very short period of notice being given and they serve as a warning to employers that the workplace pension cannot be ignored and deliberate non-compliance will not be tolerated.
Secondly, warnings have been given that failing to comply with auto-enrolment rules could show up on an employer’s credit rating.
Overall these statements highlight the fact that TPR is increasing the pressure on employers to ensure they bring in the workplace pension when required and come hot on the heels of figures showing an increase in the number of compliance notices issued in the final quarter of 2016.
